Theatre In The £

NB: Theatre In The Pound will not be at the Festival in 2007

To mark Theatre In The £'s fifth anniversary, the show left its central London home at The Cockpit Theatre and headed to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with C Theatre.

11.30 – 12.30 daily 10th - 27th August 2006

at C Central, Cabaret Bar (Venue 54).

"There is no point in reviewing what I saw ... you'd be daft to miss it!"

Peter Lathan - British Theatre Guide

Theatre In The £ is scouring the festival for acts interested in forging new working relationships and developing original theatrical ideas. The audience, for their part, get to see four ten-minute works in progress from performers drawn from across the festival, and form a crucial part in the development of the pieces by offering valuable feedback …and all for just £1!

So what's the deal?

If you wish to participate, have a little read of this then fill out the application form below. Once your application has been accepted, we’ll email/call you and you turn up and at the agreed time and pay £1 per person in your company.  (This is capped at £10 – So if there are 15 of you, your group will only pay a tenner).

Where does the money go?

No monies taken go to either C Venues or Cockpit Theatre.  All performance fees and entrance pounds are put into a special kitty earmarked for the development of a series of exciting projects supporting theatre makers.  Check out the website for more details…

Which applications will get approved?

Nearly all of them.  We trust our applicants to know what is and isn't appropriate. We're not looking for completed, polished works - the idea to is present works in their early stages in an affordable and supportive forum. Note that £ is not a showcase for existing Fringe shows - new works only please!

There are three basic rules:

1) It must be no more than 10 minutes.

2) It must be legal (no copyright infringements, incitement to hatred, etc).

3) It must be 'theatrically interesting'. (This is a very broad term but covers drama, dance, poetry, mime, storytelling and a whole host of other performance disciplines - but excludes bands, jugglers, stand-up comedy, etc)

Who runs Theatre In The £?

£ was devised by Dave Wybrow at the Cockpit Theatre five years ago. It was created to allow theatre makers an opportunity to try out ideas without the huge expensive of hiring an entire theatre, and is influenced by numerous scratch nights but most notably the ArtsLab of the 1970s. We are proud to be working on this Edinburgh season with C Theatre (headed by Prof. Michel Julian who ran the original ArtsLab).
